I’m a retired career girl with no kids who left Melbourne some 6 years ago, for a quieter more peaceful life!! My health was ‘not the best’ and leaving Melbourne gave me the opportunity to reduce the stress and strains but it also meant leaving my career behind.
It’s been exactly what I needed in terms of health and wonderful in many ways and whilst I’m really grateful for what I do have, a wonderful partner, two gorgeous dogs, and a lovely old house and garden that we are continually working on, I’ve been increasingly aware that I needed something else, something more, I just didn’t know what form that might take.
My partner Andrew, a wood worker, is an original member of Bendigo Made and a couple of months ago I discovered that Bryley Savage – Marketing & Communications (www.friendlysavage.com) & Dale Harris – Graphic Designer (www.studioink.com.au) Bendigo Made’s founders were looking for someone to step in and take the reigns. And so that’s how it all came about. I just knew from the moment I spoke to them, that this was it, the missing piece of the jigsaw
The whole project resonates with me on so many levels. I know from personal experience that taking a leap of faith into a creative career or small business is a huge thing to do and I just love the fact that Bendigo Made is all about supporting and promoting fellow creatives in these pursuits.
I believe very deeply that following your passion, following that voice inside that says you can be your own boss, you can make or paint or create yourself a new way of life, or a
little slice of something you love in amongst all the other stuff – can for some of us be the difference between a mediocre life and a rich life knowing that you’ve given it a go. I certainly know it is for me anyway.
My leap into an interior design career in my late 30’s was huge for me, and it was the best, most confronting, demanding and rewarding thing I have ever done. I founded and ran my own Interior Design Practice, specializing in colour in residential design and decoration, for almost 8 years. I did everything in the business, the website building, the photography, the accounting, the project management, the paperwork and yes there was a bit of time left for actual designing and creating peoples homes!!
I loved it but it was also a constantly challenging and fairly stressful and isolating experience and I wish I had had the opportunity to connect with other people on a similar journey, and I really would have loved someone to assist in telling my story (at least sometimes) so I didn’t have to go out and do everything myself!!! I see Bendigo Made as being able to contribute in both these areas.
It’s a platform with amazing potential to feature, highlight, showcase and promote our Region and City for its’ incredible breadth and depth of makers/artists and producers. The Directory will help people find our members and the social media and blog will promote them.
My vision is for Bendigo Made to be inclusive and collaborative, to join together what might traditionally be thought of as slightly separate markets, the handmade market, the art market and our local producers of food and wine under the one banner.
Its wonderful for me to have the ‘fire back on my belly’ I am really exciting to be embarking on this new journey.
